That was a SUPERB interview! So much to talk about--but just quickly, I loved the question of historical as "backdrop" versus historical in the way the brilliant Hilary Mantel does it in The Wolf Hall trilogy.
There were so many other wonderful pieces of this conversation--the idea of finding a place to connect with a character you might otherwise be unable to relate to was pure gold.
I also appreciated the reminder about Vikram Seth whose book, "A Suitable Boy" is on my shelf, yet to be read.
I will read both of Deepa Anappara's books--actually--let me rephrase that--I can't wait to read both her books. Thanks for this stellar conversation!
Ooh huzzah!! So glad this interview hit so many points of interest for you. Also, I really look forward to you listening, Diana, and then hearing your thoughts. I know I've said that before, but it's true. I feel like I learn through your interpretation, which is a neat second layer of experience!
That is a really kind thing to say—and I very much appreciate the feedback! It truly was a magnificent conversation…and…I am finally back in the Book Club saddle, so I’ll see you on Sunday!
